Ween Bassist to Join Marco Benevento In Return to Connecticut

Ween bassist Dave Dreiwitz will join Marco Benevento and his always-changing trio at their stop at Bridge Street Live in Collinsville, Conn. this Friday night.

Also joining Benevento on stage will be drummer Andrew Barr of The Slip, an often contributor to Benevento’s acclaimed live shows.

The Facebook event page for the show lists Yellowbirds as a ‘special guest.’ It’s unknown if the label means he’d be sitting in, but the Yellowbirds homepage does list the show as a solo set for Sam Cohen.

Friday’s 8 p.m. show will be the second to last of Benevento’s tour. He’ll then play a handful of shows with Garage a Trois.

VIP and general admission tickets can be purchased online for $25 and $15 respectively. VIP ticketholders get preferred, reserved table seating and table service. Table seating is available for GA ticketholders on a first come first serve basis.

Benevento To Play Fairfield Stage

Marco Benevento, jazz pianist and so much more, will return to the state of Connecticut with a fall show in Fairfield.

Benevento recently released Between the Needles and the Nightfall (review) in May and stopped at The Main Pub in Manchester to play a show in support of it.

This time Benevento will hit a different part of the state, bringing his act to FTC on StageOne.

The October 24 show will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available soon.

Album review: Marco Benevento’s ‘Between the Needles and Nightfall’

Something special sure is happening with Marco Benevento’s career.

The pianist/keyboardist/organist is someone you can hardly just call jazz – mainly because his music exemplifies something so much more than one genre of music.

Along with Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey’s Brian Haas, Benevento heads the class of pianists the new wave of art/experimental jazz genre has seen over the last 15 or 20 years. Like the seasoned Haas, Benevento commands his instrument with intensity and perfection, blending a touch of simplicity with complex sounds and jamming and improv.

Benevento has played with his fair share of extremely talented musicians, most notably his venture into jam band territory with Phish’s Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon. Along with drummer Joe Russo, who along with Benevento make up the Benevento/Russo Duo, the four played a short-lived tour in a band that came to be known as GRAB.

On his latest album, Between the Needles and Nightfall, Benevento’s playing has never been better. The exploratory jamming is as colorful as the album cover. A standout track for me was “RISD,” a seven plus minute piece of exceptional sound that barrels through at a fast pace. The track is the benefit of tight drum beats setting a rhythm for Benevento to play brilliant over.

In “RISD” and a great deal of other tracks on the album, Benevento’s keys come in at a pleasing high pitch, a sound I now only place with his instrument and play. He’s made this screaming sound his own and no one does it better.

But on “Wolf Trap,” things get a bit dark and menacing with Benevento’s low minor key playing overlapping his still present higher sound. The production on the album is great and “Wolf Trap” proves it, overlapping different levels of sound in a way that isn’t too much to handle for one’s ears.

The electro-rock and jazz heard on tracks like the joyous and rising anthem “Two of You” and “It Came From You,” as well as half title track “Between the Numbers” is inspiring work.

Benevento gets much help on these and all tracks from bassist Reed Mathis (formerly of Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Tea Leaf Green) and drummer Andrew Barr (The Slip). Mathis is a veteran performer and both him and Barr have an unheard of chemistry with Benevento.

Full of energy, Between The Needles & Nightfall stands out in the experimental jazz genre in so many ways. Benevento is an authority on the style of sound and play he demands from his instruments and this latest effort is just another stop on the long road of a brilliant career.

Marco Benevento To Play Manchester Show In Support of New Album

Experimental jazz pianist Marco Benevento will be playing The Main Pub in Manchester, Conn. on Friday May 7 in support of his latest album, Between the Needles and Nightfall.

Benevento will be aided by his trio, made up of The Slip members Marc Friedman (bass) and Andrew Barr (drums) and Benevento himself.

Benevento is a staple in the New York music scene, making a name for himself with his psychedelic and modern jam-inspired jazz playing and his endless list of musical collaborations. Benevento has played with a number of highly skilled musicians in the jam band and jazz genres, including Tea Leaf Green’s Reed Mathis, Charlie Hunter and memorable tour with the band GRAB, which matched Benevento up with Joe Russo and Phish’s Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon.

The New Jersey-born pianist also worked on the latest album from jazz band Garage a Trois, Power Patriot, with Mike Dillon (Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade),  Stanton Moore (Galactic) and Skerik (Critters Buggin, Les Claypool). In addition, Benevento has recorded four solo albums and four albums with Joe Russo  as the Benevento/Russo Duo.

Among Benevento’s most outstanding work is his Live at Tonic album, which in rare fashion happened to be his debut solo recording. Live at Tonic was  recorded throughout a string of November 2006 shows in New York City and featured many of the aforementioned guests.

Benevento set up shop at Sullivan Hall, a Greenwich Village music space, to run a residency of performances where the promiment modern jazz musician  invited all of his musical friends to jam along with him. Benevento had the shows recorded, which led to the creation of his first DVD, Live in NYC: The  Sullivan Hall Residency, a series of performances that matches up with Live at Tonic on the visual side.

Drum and bass artist Wyllys from Chicago is set to be Benevento’s opener. The 21+ show starts at 9:30 p.m. with tickets running only $12 a piece.

Check out this video of Benevento jamming, playing a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Friends” and “Greenpoint,” a track off the upcoming album.
